Peter Obi Denies Speculations of Party Switch Amid Labour Party Crisis; Defends Electricity Tariff Increase for Band A Customers

In the midst of swirling rumors regarding his political allegiance, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s candidate in the 2023 presidential election, has firmly denied any plans to abandon the party. Speculations arose following claims by Daniel Bwala, a former spokesperson for the Atiku/Okowa Presidential Campaign Organisation, suggesting Obi’s intentions to defect to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) alongside former Kaduna Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.

Bwala alleged that Obi’s purported exit was prompted by the ongoing internal strife within the Labour Party, exacerbated by threats from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to intervene.

Obi, a former Governor of Anambra State, dismissed these assertions during a recent engagement on X Space, attributing his absence at the party’s national convention to leadership oversight in consulting relevant stakeholders.

Addressing the media during a visit to Tike Pantami’s ram market where he donated a borehole, Obi firmly refuted the claims, emphasizing his commitment to unity and peace within the party. He stressed the importance of resolving internal conflicts and concentrating efforts on national development.

In response to reports linking him and El-Rufai to a potential move to the SDP, Obi redirected attention to immediate national concerns, expressing his priority for Nigeria’s current success over future political considerations.

Furthermore, Obi defended the recent hike in electricity tariffs for Band A customers, asserting its normalcy in global standards where urban areas typically bear higher utility costs. He advocated for targeted remedies, particularly in underserved rural communities, to mitigate the impact of such adjustments.
