Peter Obi Applauds President Tinubu’s Bold Move: ‘50% Slash in Transport Fares a Step in the Right Direction’

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has expressed his appreciation for President Bola Tinubu’s recent decision to slash interstate transportation fares by 50%. Obi views this move by the Tinubu administration as a noteworthy first-time intervention aimed at alleviating the burdens faced by the masses.

Taking to social media platform X, Obi shared his thoughts on the matter, acknowledging the reported approval of a 50% reduction in travel expenses for Nigerians during the Yuletide period, extending from Thursday, December 21, 2023, to January 4, 2024. Additionally, the President has greenlit free rides for commuters on all train services throughout this festive season.

Expressing cautious optimism, Obi stated, “If fully implemented, as reported, I consider this first-time intervention of the government, intended to help the masses, a step in the right direction.” However, he raised a crucial concern regarding the sustainability of such emergency measures beyond the festive season.

In his post, Obi pondered, “The high cost of transportation and associated hardships are all well known. The question this seasonal palliative raises is that of what happens after the festive season.” He urged for clarity on whether there exists a viable, long-term policy to shield the masses from persistently high transportation costs.

Highlighting operational challenges associated with the initiative, Obi pointed out that millions of people had already undertaken travels incurring significant costs. He questioned how such individuals would receive refunds or compensation, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive strategy to address the aftermath of this temporary relief.

As Nigerians continue to navigate the challenges posed by transportation costs, Obi’s commentary sheds light on the imperative of a sustainable and inclusive approach to alleviate the financial burdens faced by the populace.
