PDP Reacts as Rivers State Governor Defends Tinubu’s Peace Deal
Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has staunchly defended the peace agreement brokered by President Bola Tinubu between him and former Governor Nyesom Wike. The agreement, signed on December 18, aims to quell the political crisis that intensified after 27 members of the State House of Assembly defected from the PDP to the APC on December 11.
Fubara reassured the public that the peace pact is not a “death sentence” but a step towards ensuring lasting peace in the state. He emphasized his commitment to implementing the agreement while restoring political stability without compromising the collective interest of the people.
However, the Peoples Democratic Party’s National Working Committee expressed dissatisfaction, cautioning the governor against implementing the agreement without the party’s input. The PDP is actively pursuing legal action to declare vacant the seats of the defected lawmakers.
Governor Fubara commended President Tinubu for his intervention, stating that it reflects Tinubu’s love for Rivers State. He outlined plans for 2024, promising a rapid transformation with the completion of various projects.
In response, the PDP criticized Fubara’s plan to implement the peace deal, asserting that the constitutional issues surrounding the defected lawmakers’ seats cannot be decided by the peace agreement. Former PDP officials also warned of political consequences for the governor, emphasizing the need for actions in the interest of peace and democracy.
The political landscape in Rivers State remains tense as stakeholders navigate the aftermath of the defections and the implementation of the contested peace deal.
