PDP Emerges as Jonathan’s Preferred Platform for 2027 Race as Groups Jostle to Buy Him Nomination Forms

Former President Goodluck Jonathan is reportedly preparing for a possible return to presidential politics ahead of the 2027 general election, with the Peoples Democratic Party emerging as the platform expected to support his ambition.

According to a report by Vanguard, sources within Jonathan’s political camp said consultations had narrowed his options to the PDP after weeks of internal deliberations over the most viable route for a comeback bid.

A senior official close to the former president reportedly told the newspaper that supporters believe Jonathan remains a strong national figure capable of addressing the country’s economic and governance challenges.

“The decision followed extensive consultations and consideration of the current political climate,” the source was quoted as saying. “There is a belief that he can provide experienced leadership at a difficult time for the country.”

The development has triggered fresh competition among several support groups seeking to purchase the PDP presidential nomination form for Jonathan, reportedly valued at N100 million.

The groups are said to include the Coalition for Jonathan, the Goodies Movement, The New Nigeria (TNN), the Almajiri Network, Arewa for Good Governance, Northern Youth Alliance for Good Governance, Northern Coalition for Goodluck Jonathan and the North Youth Progressive Movement.

A diaspora-based group identified as the Goodluckian Movement is also reportedly lobbying to secure the form for the former president.

“We believe our movement reflects the aspirations of Nigerians both at home and abroad,” a member of the group reportedly said. “Jonathan remains a unifying figure with national appeal.”

Although Jonathan has yet to make an official declaration, sources familiar with ongoing discussions claimed he had already resolved to contest and was waiting for the appropriate time to make his position public.

The former president had previously told supporters urging him to run that he would “consult widely” before taking a final decision on the matter.

Meanwhile, political mobilisation around Jonathan’s possible candidacy has continued to gather momentum across parts of the country, especially in the North, where several youth and political organisations have publicly endorsed him for the 2027 race.

Jonathan, who served as president between 2010 and 2015, recently responded to criticism from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar by defending his time in office.

“I made mistakes, but I did my best for Nigeria,” Jonathan reportedly said while reacting to remarks attributed to Atiku.
