PDP Crisis: Governors Seek Soft-Landing for National Chairman Damagum
Governors elected under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) are actively working behind the scenes to secure a soft-landing for the embattled National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum. This comes after a truce was brokered between feuding members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC).
According to inside sources, the governors have shifted their focus to ensuring the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting proceeds smoothly, though it may be delayed from its originally scheduled date of October 24 to allow tensions to ease. Speaking anonymously, a high-ranking party official confirmed, “The governors have managed to secure a ceasefire among NWC members and are now exploring options for Damagum to step down gracefully, reverting to his previous role as Deputy National Chairman (North).”
Consultations led by key figures such as the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Bala Mohammed, are ongoing to address the leadership tussle and media confrontations. Party stakeholders are reportedly considering appointing a party leader from the North-Central region to stabilize the party ahead of the next elective convention.
Meanwhile, the chairmen of the PDP in the North-East have expressed support for Damagum and other national officials. During a meeting held in Bauchi, the North-East PDP chairmen, led by Adamawa State Chairman Tahir Shehu, pledged alignment with the party governors, the Board of Trustees (BOT), and the National Assembly caucus.
In a communique issued after the meeting, the chairmen expressed confidence in the current party leadership, stating, “We fully support the position of our governors, the BOT, and other critical stakeholders. This unity is essential to restore decorum and elevate the party to greater heights.”
The meeting also lauded the infrastructural achievements of PDP governors in Adamawa, Bauchi, and Taraba states, passing a vote of confidence in their leadership. The chairmen urged the governors to continue delivering democratic dividends to the people of the North-East and Nigeria at large.
