PDP Condemns Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Suspension, Demands Open Investigation of Akpabio
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from the Senate following her allegation of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The party described the move as an attempt to suppress the issue and shield the Senate President from scrutiny.
In a statement released by its National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the PDP criticized the Akpabio-led Senate for hastily suspending Akpoti-Uduaghan without an open investigation. The party argued that such a decision contradicts the principle of fair hearing and tarnishes the reputation of the Senate as an institution. The six-month suspension, the party added, effectively denies the people of Kogi Central their constitutional right to representation.
The PDP also pointed out that this is not the first time Akpabio has faced allegations of sexual harassment, recalling a previous accusation made by Dr. Joi Nunieh, former acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). The party insisted that if Akpabio has nothing to hide, he should step aside and allow an independent, transparent investigation.
Beyond this scandal, the PDP raised concerns about the overall leadership of the Senate under Akpabio, citing a series of controversies, including allegations of financial impropriety and negligence in its constitutional role of providing checks and balances. It also reminded Nigerians of ongoing investigations into allegations of misappropriation of N108.1 billion from Akwa Ibom State during Akpabio’s tenure as governor and an alleged N86 billion contract fraud at the NDDC while he was Minister of Niger Delta Affairs.
With growing public outrage and protests over the suspension, the PDP called on the Senate to reinstate Akpoti-Uduaghan and ensure a transparent investigation into the allegations against its president. The party emphasized that restoring public trust in the Senate requires accountability and fairness in addressing such serious claims.
