PDP Alleges Arrest of Benue State Spokesman by DSS

Mr. Bemgba Iortyom, the Publicity Secretary of the Benue State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has been reportedly apprehended by the Department of State Services (DSS) in Makurdi.

This dramatic arrest unfolded on Monday when Mr. Iortyom had arrived to keep an appointment with the state’s security agency. Sources with knowledge of the situation suggest that the detention might be rooted in a petition filed against Mr. Iortyom by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Confirming this unprecedented arrest, Mr. Cornelius Hwande, the media consultant for the Benue PDP, narrated the troubling incident, saying, “As soon as we arrived at the DSS office, around 2:11 pm, two gentlemen approached us, claiming to be from the office of the Director, and subsequently took Bemgba Iortyom into custody.”

This incident has raised eyebrows, as it is unusual for the DSS to summon individuals without concrete reasons, especially someone of Mr. Iortyom’s stature – the outspoken Publicity Secretary of an opposition party. Bemgba Iortyom is renowned for fearlessly expressing his opinions as an opposition spokesperson and is one of the most vocal critics of the APC’s administration in Benue State.

The timing of this arrest is particularly significant, given the recent controversial statements by Governor Hyacinth Alia. It has led to speculation and questions regarding potential links between the governor and Mr. Iortyom’s sudden invitation by the DSS, which could potentially escalate political tensions in the state. The public awaits further details and explanations from relevant authorities as this story unfolds.
