“One-Term Promise, Serving Food Are Signs of Desperation” – Reuben Abati Slams Peter Obi
Reuben Abati, renowned broadcaster and former presidential spokesperson, has taken a swipe at former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi over his recent promise to serve only one term if elected president. Speaking on Arise Television, Abati described the statement—as well as Obi’s past campaign antics like serving food at events—as clear signs of political desperation.
Obi’s vow to run a single term in office has sparked widespread reactions, drawing criticism from various political figures, including the incumbent Anambra State governor, Charles Soludo. Despite the backlash, Obi has remained firm on his position, insisting that his pledge reflects his commitment to delivering results within a short timeframe.
Abati, however, urged Nigerians not to fall for what he described as empty theatrics. He dismissed both the one-term promise and the symbolic gesture of serving food as desperate attempts to court public favor. According to him, such tactics lack the depth and seriousness required for national leadership.
“Any politician that comes to you and says, ‘I am going to do only one term,’ that is a sign of desperation. It will not work. Just like the gambit about serving food and carrying plates or doing boy-boy at parties—it is also a sign of desperation,” Abati said during the broadcast.
He emphasized that real progress for Nigeria hinges on electing competent leaders, not those who play to the gallery. “If Nigerian people are politically educated to a point where they can vote for a competent person regardless of where he comes from or his religion, that’s when the country will begin to move forward,” he added.
