Odumegwu-Ojukwu in Ghana to Calm Deportation Tensions

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has arrived in Ghana on a two-day official visit aimed at addressing growing concerns over the safety of Nigerians in the country. The visit comes in response to a viral video showing protests by some Ghanaians calling for the deportation of Nigerians.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu is meeting with top Ghanaian government officials and traditional leaders to engage in dialogue and reinforce Nigeria’s commitment to the safety and well-being of its citizens abroad. Her itinerary includes meetings with President Nana Akufo-Addo, Ghanaian Foreign Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, and other key stakeholders. She is also holding discussions with members of the Nigerian community in Ghana to better understand their concerns and offer reassurances of government support.

According to a statement from her media aide, Magnus Eze, the minister’s mission is focused on de-escalating tensions and safeguarding the lives, businesses, and property of Nigerians living in Ghana. Shortly after landing at Kotoka International Airport in Accra on Tuesday evening, Odumegwu-Ojukwu had a brief exchange with Ghana’s Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, who was departing for London. She continued a series of diplomatic engagements on Wednesday.

The minister reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to strong bilateral relations with Ghana, particularly in fostering mutual respect and understanding between citizens of both countries. She is expected to return to Abuja on Thursday.
