Obi Attributes Oyo, FCT, Anambra Stampedes to Hunger, Systemic Failures

Peter Obi has attributed the recent stampedes in Oyo State, Abuja, and Anambra to widespread hunger and systemic failures in Nigeria. The incidents, which occurred within five days, claimed numerous lives and left many injured. Two of the tragedies took place on Saturday morning during food distribution campaigns, highlighting the desperation faced by citizens in search of sustenance.

In a statement shared on his social media account, Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, expressed deep sorrow over the incidents, emphasizing the harsh economic realities fueling the desperation. “I am deeply saddened and distressed by the tragic loss of lives in desperate searches for food,” he wrote.

While commending the organizers of the palliative distribution campaigns for their efforts to assist the underprivileged, Obi said the stampedes reflect deeper systemic issues. He noted that the struggle for survival in challenging economic times often forces people to extremes, sometimes at the cost of their lives.

Obi also lamented the paradox of a resource-rich nation grappling with widespread hunger. “How is it possible that we cannot feed our citizens despite the vast, fertile lands our nation is endowed with? My heart bleeds,” he said.

The former governor of Anambra State commiserated with the families of the victims, extending his condolences and wishing a swift recovery for those injured. “One can only imagine the pain their families are enduring at this moment. My heart goes out to them,” he said.

Police authorities have launched investigations into the incidents as Nigerians continue to mourn the avoidable tragedies.
