FCT Minister Wike Reacts to Deadly Abuja Stampede

A tragic stampede at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, has claimed the lives of at least 10 people, including children, and left 10 others injured. The incident occurred early Saturday morning during the church’s distribution of food items to the less privileged and elderly.

In response, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike directed government hospitals to provide free medical treatment to the injured. He assured that the FCT Administration would ensure all victims receive adequate care and expressed condolences to the families affected.

Calling the incident “painful,” Mr. Wike prayed for the repose of the deceased and strength for their grieving families. To prevent future tragedies, the minister mandated that police permission be obtained for any public distribution of palliatives or similar events.

The FCT police echoed this directive, stating that organizations, religious bodies, and individuals planning public events must notify authorities in advance. Non-compliance, according to FCT Police Public Relations Officer Josephine Adeh, will result in organizers being held accountable for any incidents or loss of life caused by negligence.

The prompt response of security agencies to the tragic event was commended. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the stampede are ongoing.
