No Security Breach at Aso Rock: NCAA Clarifies Airlines Advisory

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has clarified that a recent advisory to airlines regarding restricted flying zones does not indicate a security breach at Aso Rock.

On Friday, reports suggested that the NCAA intended to penalize airline operators for violating airspace restrictions. These reports referenced an April 16 letter from the NCAA, which was purportedly issued following concerns raised by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).

Chris Najomo, acting director-general of the NCAA, addressed these claims in a conversation with TheCable. He emphasized that the directive was a routine reminder and not a response to any new security threat.

“There was no security threat to Aso Rock. The authority’s letter was simply a routine advisory to remind airlines to exercise caution around restricted areas,” Najomo stated.

Najomo confirmed that the letter was neither leaked nor the result of an investigation, underscoring that it was a standard “all operators letter,” publicly accessible on the NCAA’s website.

“The document is valid and available to the public. It’s not a secret; it’s clearly labeled and can be found on our website,” Najomo explained.

He dismissed suggestions that the letter was part of an investigative revelation, pointing out that similar advisories are issued in other countries, including the United States, to prevent accidental airspace intrusions.

“Aircraft can sometimes stray into restricted zones due to takeoff dynamics like weight and weather conditions. This is a known issue and not indicative of a security lapse,” he added.

Najomo concluded by reiterating that there had been no breach of security at Aso Rock by any airline.
