Doctor Warns Nigerians Against Consuming Rotten Tomatoes, Peppers

A Nigerian medical doctor, known as Dr. Wales, has issued a public warning against the consumption of rotten tomatoes and peppers, commonly referred to as ‘eesa’ or ‘baaje’ tomatoes.

In a widely circulated video on social media, Dr. Wales highlighted the severe health risks associated with eating these spoiled vegetables. He explained that rotten tomatoes and peppers harbor harmful microorganisms, including fungi that produce mycotoxins, which can lead to various cancers.

“Fellow Nigerians, good morning. I know that, because of the economy, you are saving money on so many things. But please, if you see these rotten tomatoes and peppers in the market, run away,” Dr. Wales urged.

Displaying a plate of visibly decayed tomatoes, he emphasized that economic hardship should not justify consuming such “poison.” He explained that fresh tomatoes are rich in Vitamin C, potassium, and antioxidants, whereas rotten ones are compromised by germs and fungi.

“These types of tomatoes are easily accessible to flies, which deposit germs and eggs inside them. But, that’s not the worst part. As these tomatoes break, microorganisms invade them, causing them to rot. Among these microorganisms are fungi known to produce something known as mycotoxins,” Dr. Wales detailed. He further noted that mycotoxins are linked to cancer and immune deficiencies in humans, and because tomatoes are high in fluid, these toxins spread rapidly.

Dr. Wales also debunked the notion that washing or boiling rotten tomatoes could eliminate these mycotoxins. He warned that these toxins could also damage the kidney and liver.

The doctor’s advice is particularly crucial as many Nigerians resort to buying cheaper, compromised produce due to the ongoing economic challenges. However, Dr. Wales’ warning underscores the importance of prioritizing health over cost-saving measures when it comes to food consumption.
