How I Earn Over N7 Million Annually from Tomato, Pepper Cultivation – Gombe Farmer

Saleh Maikudi, a 35-year-old farmer from Bula community in Akko Local Government Area, has revealed that he earns more than N7 million annually from his tomato and pepper farming ventures. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday, Maikudi highlighted how his investment in these crops has proved to be highly profitable.

Maikudi shared that he invested over N1.5 million in cultivating 30 hectares of farmland in 2023. This investment yielded a substantial return, with earnings reaching N7 million from the sale of tomatoes and peppers. His cultivation includes various types of peppers such as bell pepper (Tatashe), chili pepper, Cayenne pepper (shombo), and Scotch bonnet (hot pepper).

As the chairman of the Vegetables Farmers’ Association in his community, Maikudi oversees the annual cultivation of these vegetables across his extensive farmland. He noted that it takes approximately 10 weeks from planting to harvesting, with another 10 weeks for the harvest period.

Maikudi expressed optimism for the future, indicating that if market conditions remain favorable, he anticipates earning up to N10 million this year due to the excellent performance of his crops.

The farmer also urged the government to construct a modern market in the community to streamline the marketing process and enhance the standardization of agricultural produce. Additionally, he proposed the establishment of mini processing factories to minimize post-harvest losses, boost food security, and create job opportunities for the youth in the state.
