Why Kwam 1 Wasn’t Arrested Like Comfort Emmanson – FG Explains

The Federal Government has addressed the controversy surrounding the different handling of two recent incidents involving unruly airline passengers — Comfort Emmanson and Fuji music icon, Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as Kwam 1. Emmanson was remanded after allegedly assaulting Ibom Air crew members on a Uyo–Lagos flight on Sunday, while Kwam 1, accused of disrupting a ValueJet flight in Abuja last week, did not face court action.

Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Tuesday, Mike Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), said the situations were not comparable. He explained that in Kwam 1’s case, the airline did not pursue legal action despite having the right to do so, prompting the NCAA to file a petition with the relevant authorities instead. In contrast, Ibom Air immediately exercised its right to take legal action after its staff were allegedly assaulted, leading to Emmanson’s court remand.

Achimugu added that the NCAA was not directly involved in Emmanson’s case but did intervene in Kwam 1’s matter by advising the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) to impose a flight ban on the musician. He clarified that Kwam 1 was not handed a six-month ban, as earlier reported, but an indefinite suspension pending the outcome of investigations.

On Emmanson’s lifetime no-fly ban, Achimugu noted that airline operators have the legal authority to impose such measures. The incidents have stirred public debate over fairness and consistency in the enforcement of air travel rules in Nigeria.
