“No Plan to Compel Obasa to Resign” – Lagos APC
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has denied reports that the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, will step down as part of a settlement in the House’s recent leadership crisis. The party clarified that no such agreement was reached during negotiations to resolve tensions among lawmakers.
Obasa, who was re-elected as Speaker on Monday after Mosunmola Meranda stepped down, held a peace meeting yesterday with aggrieved lawmakers to mend internal rifts. The meeting, which took place at the assembly complex, was attended by 39 lawmakers, including Deputy Speaker Meranda. Sources indicated that the gathering aimed to foster unity and chart a way forward for the House.
The leadership crisis had drawn the intervention of key APC figures, including the chairman of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), Pa Tajudeen Olusi; Lagos APC chairman, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi; and the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro, SAN. These leaders met with anti-Obasa lawmakers to mediate and ensure stability within the assembly.
Speculations had surfaced that as part of the reconciliation, Obasa would resign within 48 hours to allow for a new Speaker from Lagos West, as demanded by 34 lawmakers. However, Lagos APC spokesperson Seye Oladejo dismissed this claim, stating that at no point during negotiations was Obasa’s resignation discussed.
Meanwhile, Obasa is set to withdraw his lawsuit against his colleagues in the interest of peace and unity within the House. A source confirmed that the House of Assembly is expected to resume proceedings tomorrow, signaling a return to normalcy after the dispute.
