“Calls for Akpabio’s Resignation Premature” – CAN
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has intervened in the controversy surrounding allegations made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, calling for restraint and urging against hasty demands for his resignation.
Rev. Joseph John Hayab, Chairman of CAN in the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory, described the situation as unfortunate and called on respected elders to mediate. Speaking in Kaduna, he stressed that the integrity of the federal legislature must be preserved, and the matter should be handled responsibly.
The controversy erupted after Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, in a televised interview last Friday, accused Akpabio of making sexual advances towards her. The allegation has sparked mixed reactions across the country, with some calling for Akpabio’s resignation.
CAN, however, cautioned against taking sides prematurely, emphasizing that no concrete evidence has been established. The association urged groups demanding Akpabio’s resignation to desist, warning that such actions could escalate tensions rather than resolve the issue.
The Christian body also underscored the importance of a fair and measured approach, acknowledging the seriousness of sexual harassment allegations while discouraging divisive narratives. It urged Nigerians to address the matter responsibly, focusing on reconciliation rather than deepening conflict.
Furthermore, CAN called on the media to avoid inflaming tensions through sensational reporting, urging all parties to refrain from comments that could polarize Nigerians along gender or regional lines. The association also appealed to lawmakers to prioritize governance and focus on improving citizens’ lives, particularly as the 2025 national budget has been passed.
