“No Appointment of Acting Chief of Army Staff,” Says Defence Headquarters
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has denied claims circulating on social media and some online platforms regarding the appointment of an acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS), following rumors surrounding the health of the current COAS, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja.
In an official statement issued on Monday by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier-General Tukur Gusau, the DHQ clarified that there has been no such appointment within the Nigerian Armed Forces. The statement emphasized that no acting COAS position exists and urged media outlets to verify their information before spreading misinformation.
The rumors of an appointment arose after reports suggested the possible demise of Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja. However, the Nigerian Army has refuted these claims, confirming that the COAS is simply on a scheduled medical check-up abroad as part of his 2024 annual leave. The Army reassured the public that there is no leadership vacuum, as Major General Abdulsalami Bagudu Ibrahim, the Chief of Policy and Plans (Army), is temporarily handling routine duties and providing briefings to Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja in line with military protocol.
Brig.-Gen. Gusau further addressed the ongoing spread of rumors, stating, “The COAS is hale and hearty and will resume duties at the conclusion of his leave.” He also warned against the circulation of false information, particularly a viral video advocating for a military takeover, reminding the public that such actions are considered treasonous under the Nigerian Constitution.
The DHQ reiterated its commitment to upholding democracy and assured the nation that the Armed Forces of Nigeria remain loyal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, focused on safeguarding the nation’s integrity.
The military continues to prioritize national security and stability, with relevant security agencies prepared to take necessary measures against any individuals or groups advocating for unconstitutional actions.
