The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), former National Chairman, Professor Rufa’i Ahmed Alkali, has officially parted ways with the party. Alkali, who had previously served as the Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), cited the ongoing turmoil within the NNPP as the primary reason for his decision.
The crisis that has been gripping the NNPP recently reached a new level of intensity, with factions within the party seemingly at odds with each other. Alkali expressed his deep concern about the party’s descent into avoidable conflicts, suspensions, counter-suspensions, and acrimonious press battles. He lamented that these internal issues had resulted in the factionalization of the party, undermining its unity and stability.
In a statement personally signed by Alkali, he highlighted his initial hope that his resignation as National Chairman in March 2023 would provide an opportunity for the NNPP to move forward and consolidate its gains from the 2023 General Elections. However, his optimism was overshadowed by the escalating internal strife.
Alkali also noted that despite the remarkable achievements of the NNPP, including victories in various elective offices, he voluntarily stepped down from his leadership position after the general elections to make way for new leadership. He emphasized the importance of personal sacrifice and dedication in building a New Nigeria.
Regrettably, the recent developments within the NNPP, marked by the emergence of factions and an apparent unwillingness to allow party elders to mediate, led Alkali to make the difficult decision to withdraw his membership from the party. He did so in accordance with the NNPP Constitution after extensive consultations.
In his parting words, Alkali called on his friends, associates, and supporters to remain patient and resolute while awaiting further communications on his future political endeavors.
This development underscores the challenges faced by emerging political parties in Nigeria and highlights the need for unity and effective conflict resolution mechanisms to ensure their growth and survival in the political landscape.
