JUST IN: Kano Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf Resigns from NNPP Alongside 21 State Assembly Members

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has officially resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing ongoing leadership conflicts and internal disputes within the party.

The governor’s decision was announced on Friday through a statement from his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa. Yusuf’s resignation takes effect on January 25, 2026, as outlined in a letter addressed to the NNPP Chairman of Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Gwale Local Government Area.

In the letter, Yusuf expressed gratitude to the party for providing him a political platform and for the support received from its leadership and members across Kano State since 2022.

However, he attributed his resignation to unresolved internal conflicts and ongoing legal battles that have affected the party’s cohesion at both state and national levels. “The growing disenfranchisement among party members has created deep divisions within the party structure, resulting in cracks that appear increasingly irreconcilable and have generated uncertainty at both state and national levels,” the governor stated.

Yusuf emphasized that his decision was guided by careful reflection and the perceived best interests of the people of Kano State. He added that the resignation was made in good faith, without bitterness, and reaffirmed his commitment to peace, unity, and the state’s development.

The governor’s departure is accompanied by the resignation of 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and 44 local government chairmen across the state.

Hon. Kabiru Zubairu, NNPP Secretary of Diso-Chiranchi Ward, confirmed receipt of Yusuf’s resignation letter and acknowledged the governor’s performance in office. “We are trying our best to contain the ongoing crisis, but we have no option than to accept the resignation of one of the most performing governors of the NNPP,” Zubairu said, highlighting Yusuf’s achievements in infrastructure, urban renewal, health, education, and economic empowerment.
