NLC Dismisses Fake Strike Notice, Urges Workers to Disregard Circular
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has vehemently declared a circulated strike notice as “absolutely fake.” The purported circular, addressed to the state councils of NLC and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) affiliate unions, reminded them of an alleged strike action set to commence on December 18, 2023.
The circular, bearing the signatures of the General Secretary of the NLC, Comrade Emma Ugbaja, and the Secretary General of the TUC, Comrade Nuhu Toro, directed affiliate unions to withdraw their services on the specified date. Curiously, the document titled “NLC/TUC Nationwide Strike Action: A Gentle Reminder” remained silent on the rationale behind the purported strike.
The circular stated: “In furtherance to the decision of the Joint National Executive Council (NEC) of NLC and TUC, all workers in Nigeria are hereby directed to withdraw their services effective 12:00 midnight on the 18th of December 2023.”
Despite the directive, when questioned about the authenticity of the circular, the General Secretary of the NLC, Comrade Emma Ugbaja, disclaimed any knowledge of a proposed strike on Monday, categorizing the memo as “absolutely fake.” He urged workers to dismiss the circular circulating on social media, asserting that it did not originate from the two labor centers.
Workers are advised to remain vigilant and await official communication from the legitimate authorities as the situation unfolds.
