NLC Convenes Emergency NEC Meeting Over Police Summons to President Ajaero
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in response to the recent police summons of its National President, Joe Ajaero, over allegations of terrorism financing.
Scheduled for 8:00 AM today, the NEC meeting will take place at the Olaitan Oyerinde Hall, Labour House, with all heads of affiliates and state chapters expected to attend. The meeting notice, titled “Notice of Emergency National Executive Council Meeting,” was signed by the NLC’s Secretary General, Emmanuel Ugboaja.
This urgent gathering follows Ajaero’s police invitation on Monday, linked to an investigation involving accusations of “criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, reasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime.” The police letter, dated August 19, 2024, and signed by ACP Adamu Mu’azu on behalf of the Commissioner of Police Intelligence, instructed Ajaero to report to the IRT Complex in Guzape Junction by 10:00 AM today, with a warning of a possible arrest warrant if he fails to comply.
This development comes on the heels of a controversial police raid on the NLC national secretariat in Abuja on July 7, aimed at uncovering evidence against an alleged international “subversive” figure. The NLC has since condemned the raid, demanding the release of its members and documents seized during the operation. The congress has also criticized what it perceives as government interference in its internal affairs, including a proposed reduction in trade union leaders’ tenure.
