NLC Calls Emergency Meeting Following Raid on Abuja Headquarters
In a swift response to the invasion of its headquarters, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has convened an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting set for August 10, 2024. This follows a raid by armed security operatives, suspected to be from the Department of State Services (DSS), on the NLC’s Abuja secretariat on Wednesday evening.
According to sources within the NLC, the security personnel forcefully entered multiple floors of the building, seizing books and files allegedly linked to the organisation of the #EndBadGovernance protests. The incident has further strained the already tense relations between the government and labour unions amid widespread public discontent.
The NLC had previously issued a strong statement, signed by its President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, and General Secretary, Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja, condemning government policies they believe have exacerbated the nation’s economic crisis. The statement called for comprehensive reforms aimed at improving citizens’ welfare, creating jobs, and ensuring equitable distribution of resources.
The upcoming NEC meeting is expected to address the invasion and determine the NLC’s next steps. While the exact time of the meeting has not been officially disclosed, insider sources suggest it will take place at 4 p.m.
In a three-page communique, the NLC reiterated its commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of Nigerian workers and the broader population. “We will not relent in our efforts to ensure that justice, equity, and good governance prevail in our nation,” the NEC stated.
