Night of Terror in Kebbi: Soldiers, Policeman Killed in Deadly Ambush

Several security personnel have been confirmed dead following a coordinated ambush by armed gunmen in Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

The attack took place on Tuesday night in the Giro Masa community, where soldiers were reportedly acting on intelligence about suspected armed groups operating in the area. Local sources said residents had earlier alerted authorities to the presence of the gunmen.

According to eyewitness accounts, troops were deployed to investigate a construction company yard believed to be linked to the suspects. However, while en route to the location, the security team was ambushed by the attackers.

Gunfire erupted, leading to a confrontation that left multiple casualties among the soldiers. A police officer was also reported killed in the incident, although the exact number of fatalities has not been officially disclosed.

Two military trucks were set ablaze during the attack, adding to the scale of the destruction.

Residents described the scene as chaotic, with heavy gunfire forcing many to flee for safety, leaving the community tense in the aftermath.

Military authorities have not yet released an official statement on the incident.

Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, confirmed the attack on Wednesday after visiting victims at the Federal Teaching Hospital in Birnin Kebbi. He condemned the assault, describing it as “barbaric,” and extended condolences to the families of the deceased security personnel.

“This is a sad incident. These are the soldiers who protect the lives of Kebbi residents,” he said.

The governor assured that the state government would cover the medical expenses of the injured and provide support to families of those killed, while reiterating his administration’s commitment to strengthening security across the state. He also visited the scene of the attack for an on-the-spot assessment.

The incident reflects ongoing security challenges across northern Nigeria, where armed groups continue to carry out attacks on both civilians and security personnel despite sustamined military operations.
