Nigeria’s Olympic Hopes Dwindle as Men’s 4x400m Relay Team Disqualified After Amusan’s Defeat
Nigeria’s medal hopes at the ongoing Paris Olympics took another hit as the Men’s 4x400m relay team was disqualified, further dampening the country’s prospects in the prestigious event. The disqualification, which occurred on Friday, August 9, 2024, was due to a lane violation reported by the referee during the semifinal race [TR17.2.3].
The Nigerian team, comprising Emmanuel Ojeli, Ezekiel Nathaniel, Dubem Amene, and Chidi Okezie, had initially finished second in their semifinal heat with a commendable time of 2:59.81, positioning themselves as strong contenders for the final. However, the lane violation resulted in their disqualification, ending their hopes of securing a medal for Nigeria. As a result, South Africa will now advance to the Men’s 4x400m final in place of Nigeria.
This setback comes on the heels of Tobi Amusan’s unexpected exit from the women’s 100m hurdles. The reigning world champion and world record holder failed to secure a spot in the final after finishing third overall in the semifinals, behind the United States’ Alayasha Johnson (12.39 seconds) and Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton (12.50 seconds).
As the Olympics draw to a close this Sunday, Nigeria has yet to win a medal, raising concerns about the country’s performance on the global stage.
Earlier this week, former Super Eagles Coach Adegboye Onigbinde criticized the state of sports administration in Nigeria, attributing the poor performance of athletes to mismanagement rather than technical deficiencies. “The issue is not with the athletes’ abilities but with the administration,” Onigbinde remarked. “Situations like this will continue if our sports administrators don’t separate politics from sports.”
He further emphasized that many sports administrators have lost sight of the developmental objectives that once brought success to Nigerian sports, suggesting a need for reform to restore the country’s competitive edge.
