Premier League Introduces New Rules for 2024/25 Season
The English Premier League (EPL) has announced a series of significant rule changes that will come into effect for the 2024/25 football season. The new regulations are expected to impact both gameplay and officiating as the domestic league kicks off on Friday, August 16, 2024, with Manchester United facing Fulham in the season opener.
In an official statement released on Thursday, the EPL emphasized the upcoming changes, stating, “There will be a difference this campaign in how match officials will be applying the rules of the game.”
Substitutes Warming Up:
One of the key changes involves the number of substitutes permitted to warm up simultaneously during a match. Although the rule allowing five substitutions per game remains unchanged from the previous season, teams will now be able to have more players warming up at the same time.
“The number of substitutes allowed to warm up at the same time on the perimeter of the pitch during a match has gone up from three to five players per team,” the EPL explained. This adjustment aligns with the existing rule that allows teams to make five substitutions during a game.
Introduction of the Multiball System:
The 2024/25 season will also see the introduction of a multiball system designed to increase the pace of play. A total of 15 balls will be in circulation during each match, ensuring that the game continues with minimal delays.
The EPL outlined the new procedure: “When the match ball goes out of play and is not quickly retrievable, players must go to the nearest cone to collect a replacement ball themselves to restart play.” The league also clarified that “ball assistants are not permitted to return a ball to a player but should return it to a vacant cone.” However, goalkeepers will be an exception, as “the ball assistants positioned behind the goals at the end where the ball goes out are allowed to return a ball to the goalkeeper who will take the restart.”
Additionally, the league issued a warning regarding any deliberate attempts by club technical staff to delay play. Such actions, including holding onto the ball or kicking it away, will result in a referee sending off the offending individual. Players who engage in similar behavior within the technical area will receive a yellow card.
More Accurate Calculation of Added Time:
In another update, the EPL has refined how stoppage time will be calculated. According to the new rules, “From this season, when a goal is scored, match officials will only start adding time on to the end of the match when the delay between the goal and the subsequent kick-off exceeds 30 seconds.” This change aims to reduce unnecessary stoppage time, allowing teams to naturally resume their positions for the restart.
