Nigeria’s Ivory Towers Shine: Covenant, UI, FUTA Lead the Pack in 2024 University Rankings
In a recent unveiling of academic excellence, Covenant University, the University of Ibadan (UI), and the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), have triumphed as the leading universities in Nigeria, as per the 2024 ratings by Times Higher Education.
Covenant University has emerged as a frontrunner, securing its place among the world’s top 1,000 universities, albeit within the global ranking range of 801-1000. This private institution has taken the prestigious top spot in Nigeria, showcasing its commitment to educational excellence. Following closely behind, the venerable University of Ibadan clinched second place, with FUTA securing the third position.
Not to be overshadowed, the University of Lagos and the University of Bayero also made commendable appearances, securing the fourth and fifth positions, respectively, in the Nigerian rankings.
The Times Higher Education World University ranking encompasses an impressive 1,904 universities spanning across 108 countries and regions, highlighting the vast scope of this comprehensive evaluation.
According to the Ranking Web, this ranking is based on the innovative WUR 3.0 methodology, meticulously crafted to measure institutions’ performance across five vital areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry engagement, and international outlook.
This accolade is not exclusive to the aforementioned institutions. Other universities in Nigeria that have achieved top rankings include the University of Ilorin, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Afe Babalola University, University of Benin, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Lagos State University, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Obafemi Awolowo University, and the University of Port Harcourt.
Of noteworthy mention is the geographical distribution of these top institutions, with nine located in the South West, two in the South East, two in the South South, one in the North West, and one in the North Central. This diversity highlights the educational prowess that spans across Nigeria, reaffirming its commitment to fostering knowledge and academic excellence across the nation.
