Nigerian Lawmakers’ Homes Attacked Amid Nationwide Protests
In a series of escalating protests across Nigeria, youths have targeted properties owned by federal lawmakers, accusing them of corruption and neglect. Viral videos on X show a mansion belonging to Nazifi Sani Gumel, a House of Representatives member for Gumel/Maigatari/Sule Tankarkar/Gagarawa Federal Constituency, being set ablaze by angry protesters. The youths claim Gumel has failed to deliver on promises made during his election 14 months ago.
Similar unrest erupted in Yobe State, where another group of protesters attacked the residence of a serving senator, accusing him of embezzling public funds intended for local development.
In a related incident in Kano, the newly constructed Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) Industrial Park was vandalized. Protesters looted the facility, making off with computers, furniture, and other equipment. Minister of Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, reported on Channels TV that between 120 and 150 computers were stolen, alongside other vital equipment. A separate group of protesters, identifiable by green caps labeled “peace,” eventually intervened to disperse the looters.
President Bola Tinubu’s administration acknowledged the severity of the situation, noting that additional security measures are being considered to protect public assets amidst the ongoing protests.
