Russia, Ukraine Clash Over Accusations of Meddling in Nigeria’s Protests

Tensions have escalated between Russia and Ukraine as both nations exchanged strong accusations regarding alleged foreign interference in Nigeria’s recent protests. The diplomatic row follows demonstrations across Nigeria, initially sparked by dissatisfaction with President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the naira’s devaluation.

On Friday, the Russian government issued a stern warning to the United States, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom, accusing them of spreading unfounded claims that Russia was behind the protests. Moscow’s statement came amid growing concerns about foreign involvement in the October 1st protests, which followed earlier demonstrations in August. During those protests, the appearance of Russian flags raised suspicions of foreign interference, particularly in light of Russia’s expanding influence in West Africa.

In a statement, Yury Paramonov, Russia’s Press Secretary, rejected accusations made by Western and Ukrainian officials, describing them as baseless fabrications aimed at undermining Nigeria-Russia relations. Russia insisted it had no involvement in the protests, dismissing claims by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, former British Council Director in Nigeria David Roberts, and Ukraine’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Ivan Kholostenko.

“The coordinated media campaign by Western and Ukrainian officials is an attempt to meddle in Nigeria’s internal affairs and shift the blame for unrest onto Russia,” Paramonov said. The Russian Embassy in Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to Nigeria’s sovereignty and peaceful dialogue.

In response, Ukraine’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Ivan Kholostenko, condemned Russia’s involvement in global conflicts, citing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as an example of its aggressive behavior. Kholostenko accused Russia of committing war crimes in Ukraine and undermining international food security, vowing that Moscow would face accountability for its actions.

As of the time of this report, the U.S. and UK embassies had yet to respond to the Russian government’s claims.
