NCC Temporarily Suspends MTN’s Disconnection of Globacom Over Unpaid Debt

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced a temporary halt to the planned partial disconnection of Globacom by MTN due to unresolved interconnect charges. The decision, communicated in a statement by Reuben Muoka, the Director of Public Affairs of the commission, comes after the NCC had initially approved the partial disconnection on January 8.

The partial disconnection would have restricted Globacom’s subscribers from making calls to MTN, while still allowing them to receive calls within the Globacom network. However, the NCC has now extended a 21-day hold on the phased disconnection, effective from January 17.

Mr. Muoka emphasized the NCC’s awareness of the potential impact on consumers and highlighted ongoing efforts to facilitate a resolution between MTN and Glo. He stated, “The commission is pleased to announce that the parties have now reached an agreement to resolve all outstanding issues between them.”

While expressing hope for a resolution within the 21-day period, the NCC stressed the importance of settling interconnect debts for all telecom operating companies. Muoka reminded Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) and other licensees to adhere strictly to the terms and conditions outlined in their interconnection agreements, emphasizing compliance with regulatory obligations.
