In a pivotal move following his swearing-in, Afam Osigwe, the new President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has announced the formation of the Citizens’ Liberties Committee (CLC). The committee is designed to enhance the protection of human rights and civil liberties in Nigeria.

Osigwe, who officially began his term on Thursday after succeeding Mr. Yakubu Maikyau, unveiled the appointments during his inaugural address at the NBA conference in Lagos. The committee will be led by Nuhu Egya as Chairman and Malachy Ugwumadu as Alternate Chair. Notable members include renowned human rights lawyers Barrister Deji Adeyanju and Inibehe Effiong, alongside Maxwell Opara.

Osigwe stressed the NBA’s role in upholding the rule of law and holding governments accountable. He emphasized the committee’s mandate to conduct monthly inspections of police stations and detention facilities, ensuring compliance with the Administration of Criminal Justice Act. Additionally, the committee will oversee inspections in collaboration with NBA branches and Chief Judges across the states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The CLC will also guide Human Rights Committees in monitoring these facilities, with public participation encouraged for greater transparency and accountability.

In response to his appointment, Adeyanju expressed gratitude and excitement, highlighting the committee’s significance in advancing human rights protections. “This committee represents a crucial step toward reinforcing the protection of human rights and civil liberties in Nigeria,” Adeyanju stated. He called on legal professionals to unite in the fight for justice and equality, stressing the importance of collaborative efforts for meaningful change.
