Maiduguri Flooded as Alau Dam Breaks Down
Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, is facing severe flooding following a reported failure of the Alau Dam. The dam, which has been at full capacity for the past week, reportedly broke down, causing widespread inundation of residential areas.
In response to the crisis, Usman Tar, Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, issued an urgent evacuation notice early Tuesday morning. The statement, titled “Flooding Alert for River Bank Residents,” emphasized the need for immediate action to protect lives and property.
Professor Tar highlighted the severity of the situation, noting, “Due to the unusually high volume of water this year, we urge all residents living along the riverbank to take immediate measures to safeguard themselves and their belongings. The failure of the Alau Dam has breached another channel, leading to extensive damage to farmland and threatening further flooding.”
Residents are advised to adhere to designated evacuation routes to ensure their safety.
The current situation recalls a similar incident in 1994, when the Alau Dam’s failure led to unprecedented flooding, affecting nearly half of Maiduguri. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the current crisis is reminiscent of that devastating event.
