NYSC Confirms Death of Female Corps Member in Orientation Camp
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has confirmed the death of a female corps member at the orientation camp in Maiduguri, Borno State.
According to officials, the corps member died on Monday evening, April 27, 2026, after falling ill. She was later pronounced dead at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
The Borno State NYSC Coordinator, Nasir Bello, told The Punch that the deceased had an underlying health condition prior to arriving at camp. He clarified that she did not die during physical drills.
“She died in the teaching hospital, not during drills. She reported to camp with an underlying ailment,” Bello said.
He added that the corps member was unable to participate in camp activities due to her condition and received assistance from clinic staff during registration. Bello declined to disclose details of the illness, stating it was not within his authority to do so.
However, accounts from individuals within the camp differ. Some sources alleged that the corps member collapsed after an evening drill and was rushed to the hospital, where she was later confirmed dead. Another account from a security official indicated that she collapsed in her hostel later that evening, not during the exercise.
A fellow corps member also claimed the deceased was diabetic and suggested that her medication may have been confiscated upon entry into the camp. This claim has not been officially verified.
