Maid Arrested After 16-Month Search for Allegedly Stealing $60,000 in Jewellery in Suspected Crime Syndicate
After an intensive 16-month investigation, police have apprehended a 33-year-old woman alleged to have stolen jewellery worth over $60,000 from her employer, just hours after starting work as a domestic helper. Authorities believe the case may be part of a larger, organised scheme targeting affluent households.
The suspect, identified as Alice Udey, was arrested at the Ikoyi Police Station in Lagos. Udey, who reportedly used multiple aliases, is accused of securing her position as a maid through legitimate channels before disappearing with her employer’s jewellery the following day. The incident, which took place over a year ago, has led investigators to suspect a coordinated crime network.
“This appears to be a well-orchestrated scheme where suspects pose as domestic workers to gain access to homes,” said a senior police officer, who requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the ongoing investigation. “We believe Ms. Udey is part of a larger syndicate operating in upscale areas.”
The arrest was made after months of surveillance and intelligence work by authorities, who are now widening their investigation to locate additional suspects believed to be part of the criminal ring. Police urge the public to report any similar incidents as they work to dismantle the suspected network.
Ms. Udey faces charges related to theft, with additional charges expected as more details emerge. Investigators continue to probe the extent of the syndicate’s operations, with a focus on protecting high-profile neighborhoods from further criminal activity.
