Maid Remanded in Jail Over Alleged $60,000 Jewellery Theft in Lagos
The Ebute-Metta Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State has remanded 33-year-old Alice Udey, a maid accused of stealing jewellery valued at $60,000 from her former employer. Udey, who is also facing multiple theft allegations from other employers, will remain in police custody as investigations continue. Chief Magistrate Nike Olagbende adjourned the case until December 19 for further proceedings.
Prosecutors have disclosed plans to amend the initial charges following reports from additional complainants. Among them is 68-year-old Mrs. Theresa Isemene, who claimed her iPad was stolen within 24 hours of hiring Udey. Other employers have also reported the disappearance of money and valuables shortly after employing the suspect.
The police are investigating whether Udey is part of a larger syndicate using domestic work as a front to access homes in affluent areas. Superintendent of Police Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, confirmed Udey’s arrest in October after a 16-month search by investigators from the Ikoyi Police Station.
Udey reportedly obtained her position as a domestic worker through seemingly legitimate channels before allegedly committing the thefts. Authorities are continuing their efforts to uncover further details about the case.
