Lagos Policemen Face Trial for Alleged N1 Million Extortion of Corps Members
Four Lagos State policemen accused of extorting N1 million from National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members have been summoned for trial.
Lagos Police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, announced via a post on X that the officers, involved in the alleged extortion and kidnapping of three NYSC members in Surulere, are now facing disciplinary action. He confirmed that the trial has commenced and urged the victims to present their testimonies at the Complaint Response Unit in the State Headquarters to support the case against the accused officers.
The incident, which caused an uproar on social media, was first exposed by activist Olúyẹmí Fásípè. According to his account, the officers allegedly abducted the corps members and took them to Kafaru Oluwole Tinubu House at Area C Police Command, Surulere, where they were forced to pay N1 million.
“Their only crime was being in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Fásípè revealed, sparking public outrage.
As the trial proceeds, the Lagos State Police Command has reiterated its commitment to ensuring justice is served. Authorities are calling on the victims to provide crucial evidence that will aid the investigation and bring accountability to the officers involved.
