Labour Voices Strong Opposition to Oronsaye Report Implementation
In a press briefing held today, the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria vehemently opposed the Federal Government’s move to implement the Oronsaye Report without a thorough review.
President Tommy Etim-Okon emphasized the necessity for the government to reconsider its approach in reducing the cost of governance. Etim-Okon asserted that laying off already meagerly paid workers is not the solution.
Addressing concerns, Etim-Okon pointed out that the agencies earmarked for merger, scrapping, or subsumption under the Oronsaye Report were established by Acts of the National Assembly. Until these laws are repealed, implementing the report’s recommendations could lead to legal challenges.
President Tinubu, however, has given his approval for a 12-week period for the implementation of the Oronsaye Report. The standoff between the government and the labour union adds a new dimension to the ongoing debate over the restructuring of government agencies.
