Killing of 16 Hausa Hunters in Edo: Police Arrest 14 Suspects
The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the arrest of 14 individuals linked to the killing of travelers along the Uromi-Obajana Road in Edo State. The incident, which involved a violent mob attack by a local vigilante group, has drawn strong condemnation from the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun.
According to a statement by Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the victims were traveling in a truck and claimed to be hunters. However, they were found in possession of 19 locally fabricated firearms. Unsatisfied with their explanation, the vigilantes accused them of being criminals and subjected them to mob justice, leading to tragic consequences.
In response, the Edo State Police Command deployed operatives to restore order in the affected community, leading to the arrest of 14 suspects. A manhunt is currently underway to apprehend others involved in the attack.
To ensure a thorough investigation, the Inspector-General has directed DIG Sadiq Abubakar of the Force Criminal Investigation Department to take over the case. He reassured the public that all those responsible would face justice.
The police have urged citizens to refrain from jungle justice and allow law enforcement agencies to carry out their duties professionally. Additionally, they reminded the public that the unlawful possession of firearms remains a criminal offense and encouraged individuals with unlicensed weapons to surrender them to authorities.
The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that those involved in the mob attack are held accountable.
