Kano Police Launch Manhunt as 72 Repented Thugs Return to a Life of Crime
Kano State is currently grappling with a resurgence of criminal activities as 72 individuals, formerly repentant thugs, have returned to a life of crime, posing a threat to the peace in the Dala and Kurnar Asabe areas of the state.
In a press conference held on Friday, the State Commissioner of Police, Muhammed Usaini Gumel, disclosed the alarming trend. The renegade group, comprised of recalcitrant youths, has been instigating unrest to facilitate robberies targeting residents, stealing valuables such as phones and money.
Gumel highlighted a specific case involving Bahago Alfa of Kukar Bulukiya, previously one of 662 repentant thugs. Alfa and 71 of his followers reportedly robbed Dan’azimi Dala Rijiya Biyu, making off with N2 million in cash and a golden ring from his daughter.
Declaring these individuals “enemies of peace,” Gumel urged all security agencies, vigilantes, PCRC, and relevant stakeholders to collaborate in apprehending the culprits. He emphasized that the trust placed in the repentant individuals had been shattered, and the state would no longer entertain the notion of repentance for this group.
Despite this setback, Gumel assured residents that the police force remains committed to maintaining security. He revealed that 50 repentant thugs are actively assisting the police as Special Constabulary, with additional members allocated to the federal fire service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and sanitation ambassadors working with the Kano State government-owned REMASAB.
As the manhunt intensifies, the police commissioner promised to build on the successes achieved and ensure a safer environment for all residents, particularly during the festive season
