Nigeria’s First Lady, Remi Tinubu, and Abia State Governor’s wife, Priscila Otti, jointly spearheaded the Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme (RHIESS), offering financial relief and essential items to 250 elderly citizens in Abia.

Under the program themed “Better Days Ahead,” Priscila Otti, speaking on behalf of Remi Tinubu, explained that the initiative aims to economically empower vulnerable citizens aged 65 and above across the nation. The program, totaling N950 million, received approval from the governing board of the Renewed Hope Initiative, the pet project of Nigeria’s First Lady.

Otti stated, “The scheme is to support 250 vulnerable elderly citizens aged 65 and above in all 36 States of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory and veterans from the Defence and Police Officers Wives Association.” Each state will receive N25 million to alleviate the economic challenges faced by the elderly during the festive period.

Expressing gratitude, Otti urged the elderly to prioritize their health, nurture their minds, and strengthen bonds with loved ones. The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Blessing Felix, praised the initiative, asserting that it signifies better days for Abia State.

Blessing Felix’s ministry plans to collaborate with the Office of the Wife of the Governor to integrate the elderly into cooperative societies. The Wife of the Mayor of Aba North, Mrs. Ifenyinwa Udeagbala, representing the Wives of Mayors in the State, expressed appreciation and pledged to ensure the programs reach those in need.

Oti Nwaka, the facilitator of Abia State Forum for the Elderly, commended the scheme, emphasizing its significance as a beacon of hope for the elderly. The event, attended by various dignitaries, saw the Wife of the Governor personally distributing cheques, bags of rice, and other essential items to the beneficiaries.
