Man Arrested by NSCDC for Using Fake Bank Alert to Buy N7m Car
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Bauchi State has arrested a 30-year-old man, Hanif Muhammed Umar, for allegedly using a fake bank transfer alert to obtain a car valued at N7 million.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Saminu Yusuf, disclosed the arrest in a statement issued on Sunday, March 8, 2026. He said Umar and an alleged accomplice, Sani Abdullahi, were apprehended over offences including criminal conspiracy, cybercrime, and attempted theft.
According to Yusuf, the arrest followed a complaint by the vehicle owner, who reported that the suspect presented a fabricated bank alert as payment for the car.
Investigators traced the suspect to Misau Local Government Area, where he was arrested on February 22 after security operatives launched an investigation into the report.
Yusuf said the vehicle owner had instructed his driver to deliver the car to Azare in Katagum Local Government Area for a potential buyer. The suspect allegedly initiated a fake credit alert from an Opay account showing a transfer of N7 million and drove off with the car shortly after receiving it.
The owner later discovered that the bank alert was fraudulent and reported the incident to NSCDC officers. Security personnel subsequently intercepted the suspect and his accomplice at a checkpoint and recovered an unregistered grey Mercedes-Benz C300 4MATIC.
The spokesperson said investigations are ongoing.
He added that the state command, led by Commandant Oloyede Nelson Oyerinde, remains committed to tackling crime across the state.
Yusuf also cautioned young people against involvement in cybercrime, fraud, and other illegal activities, warning that such offences carry serious legal consequences.
