Lagos Court Sentences Obiajulu Emeka for $850,000 Fraud

Lagos State High Court in Ikeja has sentenced Obiajulu Emeka Emmanuel to one year in prison and ordered him to pay a fine of ₦1,000,000, following his conviction for obtaining $850,000 under false pretences. The sentence, handed down by Justice Ismail Ijelu, took effect from 9 March 2026.

Emeka was first arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Lagos Zonal Directorate 1, on 10 November 2025. He faced 21 counts including obtaining under false pretence, forgery, and retention of stolen property, under the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act, 2006, and the Criminal Law of Lagos State.

During the trial, it was established that between January 2018 and December 2019, Emeka dishonestly converted over ₦21 million belonging to Taeko Omomo, who had partnered with him to establish First Unspeakable Grace Ltd for property acquisitions. Despite receiving $850,000 from Omomo for land purchases and development, Emeka failed to complete the transactions or return the funds.

Prosecution counsel C. C. Okezie presented documents showing that the EFCC had already secured a final forfeiture order at the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, for three of Emeka’s properties, which were transferred to the victim.

Following amendments to the charges during the trial, Emeka pleaded guilty on 5 March 2026. Justice Ijelu ruled that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt. The court confirmed the forfeiture of the three properties, ordered Emeka to pay the fine within 30 days, and instructed him to maintain good behavior under EFCC supervision.
