Kano Govt Reacts As Court Awards N30bn Damages Against Controversial Shop Demolition

The Kano State Government finds itself at the center of controversy as a Federal High Court orders the payment of a staggering N30 billion in compensation to the Incorporated Trustees of Massallacin Eid Shop owners. This judgment comes in response to the unlawful demolition of their shops, a move deemed unconstitutional and “barbaric” by Justice Samuel Amobeda.

The ordeal began in June when the Kano State Government, under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, embarked on the demolition of shopping malls around Kano Eid Ground, citing them as illegal structures. This action was purportedly carried out in line with the government’s campaign promises to the people of Kano State.

In a bold response, the traders, united under the banner of the Incorporated Trustees of Massallacin Eid Shop Owners, decided to challenge the demolition in the Federal High Court.

However, the state’s Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Haruna Dederi, has swiftly reacted to the court’s ruling. He labeled the judgment as “unfounded” and assured the public that the government possesses all the necessary documents to appeal the case.

“We are going to contest that at the Court of Appeal, and moreover, the land use decree is very clear about the powers of the governor over land in the state and more particularly in urban areas,” stated Commissioner Dederi.

As this legal battle unfolds, the fate of the N30 billion compensation hangs in the balance, while the controversy surrounding the shop demolition continues to capture public attention in Kano State.
