Nigerian Navy Apprehends Eight Stowaways inside Europe-bound Ship
In a recent operation conducted by the Nigerian Navy Ship Beecroft, Apapa Lagos, eight stowaways were arrested from the Tanker Ship Charminar Panama, destined for Europe. The operation took place in the early hours of Thursday and led to the detention of these individuals, all of whom are Nigerian nationals. The stowaways had clandestinely entered the vessel under the cover of darkness and were discovered inside the vessel’s rudder compartment, alongside provisions such as loaves of bread, biscuits, and sachets of water, within Lagos Anchorage. Additionally, during the operation, the Base patrol team also arrested six individuals, including a female who had been impersonating Navy personnel.
The Base Operation Officer, Lieutenant Commander Tunde Ali, reported that the patrol team received information regarding the presence of suspected stowaways on Charminar Panama on Wednesday, September 28, 2023, at approximately 2:20 am. The team promptly moved to the vessel, where they found and disembarked eight men: John Festus (30), Kingsley James (34), Egborjede Christopher (43), Lucky Iweru (46), Frank Uche (33), Omosheri Wilson (33), Lisa Segun (37), and Abu Majid (25). These individuals were subsequently handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) in Apapa for further action.
Daniel Duguryil, a representative of the NIS, stated that the stowaways would undergo profiling and then be transferred to an appropriate security agency for further investigation.
In a related development, the Base patrol team also arrested eight individuals, including a female, who were allegedly impersonating Navy personnel. These suspects, identified as Sylvester Chukwuedo, Oludipe Rotimi, Mr. Emmanuel Chukwuedo, Leonard Okonye, Dominic Nwabueze, and Mrs. Akinola Abidemi, claimed to be officials of the “Merchant Sail Navy” and were found wearing different Nigerian Navy uniforms at the time of their arrest.
The Commander of NNS BEECROFT, Commodore Kolawole Oguntuga, reported that their arrest was made following an intelligence report on alleged fraudulent activities by these impostors. During the operation, two Toyota Hilux vehicles were seized, along with counterfeit Nigerian Navy identification cards and related documents. These vehicles, along with the suspects and recovered exhibits, have been handed over to the appropriate agency for further investigation and prosecution.
Commodore Oguntuga emphasized the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to combating illegal activities and protecting law-abiding citizens. He encouraged citizens to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities, underscoring the importance of collective efforts in safeguarding the public from potential scams and fraudulent activities.
