As Organised Labour Unions Shun Emergency Meeting with FG Indefinite Strike Looms
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have decided to forego an emergency meeting with the Federal Government, fueling concerns of an imminent nationwide strike.
The meeting, convened by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong, was slated for 3 pm at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, in a bid to dissuade the labor unions from proceeding with their planned indefinite strike scheduled to begin on October 3, 2023.
The strike threat initially arose from the economic hardships faced by Nigerians following the removal of fuel subsidies by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. The organized labor, along with affiliated bodies, has since been mobilizing members in preparation for the strike.
Aviation sector workers, including the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers, and the Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals, have all pledged their support for the strike. Furthermore, the National Union of Banks, Insurance, and Financial Institutions’ Employees and the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) have also declared their intentions to join the indefinite strike.
This united front from various sectors of the workforce raises concerns about the potential severe impact on the nation’s economy if the strike materializes.
The timing of this labor unrest is particularly worrisome, given Nigeria’s ongoing economic challenges, including a depreciating Naira trading at N985/$ in the parallel market and a staggering inflation rate of 25.80% in August.
As tensions rise and negotiations falter, the nation watches with bated breath, fearing the repercussions of a widespread strike that could disrupt essential services and exacerbate the economic crisis.
