Kano Chief Magistrate Suspended for Transferring Funds from Frozen Bank Account to Personal Account

The Kano State Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has taken decisive action by indefinitely suspending Chief Magistrate Talatu Makama amidst allegations of serious misconduct. Makama allegedly facilitated the transfer of funds from a frozen bank account into her personal account, a move that has led to her immediate suspension pending further investigation.

According to a statement released today by Baba Jibo-Ibrahim, spokesperson for the Kano JSC, Makama faced scrutiny following three separate petitions filed against her. The Judiciary Public Complaints Committee (JPCC) conducted a thorough investigation into the allegations, revealing significant findings of judicial impropriety.

“The JPCC findings indicate that Chief Magistrate Talatu Makama engaged in actions amounting to gross misconduct, including ordering the transfer of funds from a frozen account into her personal bank account,” the statement read.

Additionally, the JPCC highlighted concerns of judicial bias and improper conduct during proceedings involving Makama. The commission emphasized its commitment to upholding the integrity of the judiciary and ensuring accountability among its members.

In a related development, the JSC also addressed misconduct cases involving other judicial officers. Senior Magistrate Rabi Abdulkadir was suspended for one year due to what was described as “judicial recklessness” in handling a specific case, while Senior Registrar Abdu Nasir received a strong warning and a deferred promotion for misconduct related to mishandling court fees.

Furthermore, Chief Magistrate Tijjani Saleh-Minjibir faced disciplinary action, being recalled from judicial duties for a year due to unsatisfactory responses to queries about his conduct.

The Judicial Service Commission reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of judicial conduct and safeguarding the public’s confidence in the legal system.
