UNIZIK Graduate Dies in Prank Gone Wrong, Friend Hospitalized

A tragic incident occurred at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) on June 9, 2024, resulting in the death of Ifunanya Miracle, a recent graduate from the Department of Quantity Surveying. Her friend, Peace, a student in the Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry, sustained injuries and is currently hospitalized.

The incident happened around 7 pm when Ifunanya and Peace boarded a tricycle on the university premises. According to reports, a fellow passenger attempted to rob them, prompting the two friends to jump from the moving vehicle in a desperate bid to escape. Ifunanya suffered fatal head injuries, while Peace was rushed to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital for treatment.

Witnesses revealed that the alleged robber later claimed it was a prank, and reportedly turned himself in to the police. This claim has been met with skepticism by students and residents alike.

A student, who requested anonymity, shared, “Miracle did a Point-of-Sale business on campus. We were shocked to hear about her death. She had just finished her day’s work and was heading home when this happened.”

UNIZIK’s spokesperson, Dr. Emmanuel Ojukwu, confirmed the incident, emphasizing it was a prank gone wrong. “The university is aware of the situation. It was not a robbery but an expensive prank. The families involved have met, and the prankster, a final-year student, will face disciplinary action after the burial.”

Dr. Ojukwu added, “This unfortunate event serves as a stern warning against dangerous pranks. The university deeply regrets the loss and will ensure the responsible student faces consequences.”

The prankster’s family has agreed to cover the funeral expenses for Ifunanya and the medical bills for Peace.
