Former President Donald Trump announced that Sen. JD Vance of Ohio will be his running mate and vice-presidential candidate for the 2024 presidential election. The announcement was made on Trump’s Truth Social network as the Republican National Convention commenced in Milwaukee.

Sen. JD Vance, 39, gained national attention with his 2016 memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy,” and was elected to the Senate in 2022. Known for his strong support of Trump’s “Make America Great Again” agenda, Vance’s selection highlights his transformation from a fierce critic to a loyal ally of Trump. This choice marks the first time a millennial has joined a major-party ticket, addressing concerns about the advanced age of many political leaders.

The announcement follows an attempted assassination of Trump at a recent rally, bringing heightened attention to the campaign and the importance of the vice-presidential role. Vance faced criticism for suggesting President Joe Biden was to blame for the violence in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Trump praised Vance for his commitment to American workers and farmers, particularly in critical Midwestern states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Ohio. Vance’s selection comes after other potential candidates, including Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, were informed they were not chosen.
