JUST IN: Tinubu Appoints Obih, Akinfeleye to Varsity Governing Councils, Names Principal Officers for Zamfara Health Sciences University
President Bola Tinubu has approved key appointments into the governing councils of two federal universities and named principal officers for the Federal University of Health Sciences and Technology, Tsafe, Zamfara State.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President appointed Hon. Chisom D. Obih to the Governing Council of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State. Obih’s appointment fills a vacancy created by the death of a council member.
Similarly, Prof. Ralph Akinfeleye, a veteran communications scholar and former Head of the Department of Mass Communication at the University of Lagos, has been named to the Governing Council of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State. Akinfeleye, who chairs the Centre of Excellence in Multimedia and Cinematography at UNILAG and oversees Unilag Radio 103.1 FM and Television, replaces Mr. Wahab Owokoniran. Owokoniran was recently appointed Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Federal University of Transport, Daura, Katsina State.
In Zamfara State, Prof. Ibrahim Adamu Yakasai has been appointed Vice-Chancellor of the newly established Federal University of Health Sciences and Technology, Tsafe. Other principal officers named include Mr. Hamisu Yusuf Yelwa as Registrar, Usman Nakazalle Sanusi as Bursar, and Dr. Shehu Aminu Liman as Librarian.
Prof. Yakasai, a retired Colonel in the Nigerian Army, currently serves as Provost of the College of Health Sciences at Bayero University, Kano, and chairs the Committee of Provosts of Colleges of Medicine in Nigeria. He is also a member of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo, Benue State.
The new Vice-Chancellor earned his MBBS from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and received postgraduate training in the United Kingdom under a European Economic Commission scholarship, culminating in membership and fellowship of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. He also holds a Master’s degree in Medical Education from the University of Winchester and is a Fellow of both the International College of Surgeons (USA) and the American College of Surgeons. Prof. Yakasai previously served as Director-General of the Hospitals Management Board in Kano State.
The appointments take immediate effect.
