JUST IN: Supreme Court Orders Suspension of Funds to Rivers State, Reinstates Amaewhule as Speaker
The Supreme Court of Nigeria has directed the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to suspend all fund disbursements to the Rivers State government. This order will remain in effect until the state’s House of Assembly is duly reconstituted. The court further mandated that Martin Amaewhule resume his position as Speaker, alongside all elected members of the Assembly, to address the ongoing legislative impasse.
This ruling comes after a series of legal confrontations concerning the legitimacy of the state’s legislative body. In October 2024, the Court of Appeal in Abuja affirmed Amaewhule as the legitimate Speaker, dismissing an appeal by Governor Siminalayi Fubara. The appellate court also invalidated the 2024 state budget, citing its improper presentation to only a fraction of the Assembly members.
